Subaru answered our pleas! I consider this a ute. And a mighty good ute at that. Might have 4 doors... but its got a flat 4, manual gearbox, a turbo, and awd. Why does no one like these? This is now a subaru ute thread...

I love the way these look but I'm told that they're unreliable and poorly built.

These things look amazing when lowered correctly...

My friend is looking for a black Baja turbo. Not an easy car to find (unmolested at that)

I love these things! I was trying so hard to find one before I bought my Outback, but they're extremely hard to find in my area, especially for a decent price.

Not yet really a meme, since I custom made it on one of the meme generators.
Bed too small to be truly useful. See http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/its-utesday-ba…

Probably stems from the crappy NA 2.5 Subaru used that had a habit of blowing head gaskets.

how so?? its built off pretty much a legacy outback, and im sure the engine is no different (i dont know subaru engine models so im guessing). I suspect they fall victim to head gaskets and cv joints, but besides that i didnt think they were horrible.

lol you used the meme rage comics thing. You know what i mean!
Is a ute truly useful anyways? I dont expect to be bring back 1ton of mulch in the back. Its not designed to be a pickup alternative. It is its own unique breed.
And how did i miss your post! Dang, i had been thinking of the baja all week, and now you reminded me to make a post about them haha.

Needs more Baja Yellow.
Also, this:

This particular subaru, i feel, is one that has less of a chance of being molested and driven hard by 'kiddies'. It seems more like an older persons car.
Though, if i had one, id hoon it.

I consider any car that has a tendencey to need head gaskets under 125000 miles a major reliability gamble. those are very expensive to have replaced.
![]() 02/13/2014 at 12:39 |

really?! i have never seen a modified baja ever. they are all driven by older men, or women.

Tragically, never offered in STi trim.

!!! that sounds glorious through the tunnel. and LOL at the launch.
And if i got a yellow one, it would be an offroad baja. Any other color, lowered and street prepped.

Too difficult or small to fit one or more outdoor toys is one of my main standards.

Lol you want to stick an atv or bikes in the back? Thats the job for a truck, not a ute im afraid. Plus you cant expect the flat 4 to tow too much, sure its got some torque, but not truck torque.

Ya I think thats why most of them have held their value well over time. Its a shame I couldn't find one. I wouldn't even utilize the "bed" in the back, the car would be for hooning and lulz.

I dont see it as a big deal. Its what, a 1-1300$ fix if you give it to a shop? Its gonna cost you about 1K to get a timing belt done on a honda every 80-100K miles. The headgaskets are usually a 1 time fix and you get the Tbelt done at the same time for the included cost.
If for every 100K miles, im into it for 1 grand in major maintenance, thats seems doable to me.
maybe im crazy idk. haha

its a shame. But thats what craigslist is for. Everyone wrecks STI's all the time... part out threads!

Well, they seem to be less or equal in price to a WRX. And between the two, id have the baja. I wouldnt use the bed for actual things either haha.

I have said this before and I'll say it again. Best daily-driver IN. THE. WORLD.

lowered, stock, or lifted?
![]() 02/13/2014 at 13:09 |

Well high mileage too. Not exactly a car I want that's been around the block knowing the reliability of the motor.
![]() 02/13/2014 at 13:16 |
|
I mean if thats ALL you do in 100k miles yea, but the problem is its one big fat bill to be hit with.
If I have anything I have to fix on a vehicle and its more than 500$ in one trip to the shop, its a very expensive fix.
Maybe I'm just poor.
![]() 02/13/2014 at 13:31 |

Maybe lower it just a bit for summer and raise it for winter
![]() 02/13/2014 at 13:36 |

I think it comes down to being an informed buyer. WE, us car people, know about subaru (anything pre 06 or 07 iirc) having HG issues. We can then take the calculated risk and make a decision upon that.
I didnt buy a subaru, i bought a honda. I budgeted a grand for a Tbelt, but instead, used that extra grand to get a car that recently had it done. Calculated risk. Things could still go wrong and cost me a lot.
Idk, its all too variable to give straight answers. But by your logic, i assume you would agree that all subaru's are unreliable?

They didn't sell well.
But those who have them... LOVE them, they are almost never for sale used, people keep them.
The big problem... lack of cargo weight or towing capacity... almost entirely because the rear wheels are between the 'bed' and the rear seats in the cabin. Anything loaded in the car, or tongue-weight on a trailer... is all lever-action on the rear suspension, and the long rear overhang.
If the wheelbase had been extended, it would have been great.
I wish Subaru would do a new BRAT-style thing on the Forester platform... with only a two-door cabin, and a longer bed, with the rear wheels properly placed in the middle, or slightly aft of the middle of the bed's length.

I can agree with that last statement lol
![]() 02/13/2014 at 14:22 |

Fair enough. I admire someone who will stick to their guns. I still reckon they are reliable, but i havent put my money where my mouth is yet haha.

haha. I've heard some things and also I know from experience the boxer motors are a bitch to work on.
Though most modern motors are...
